Benefits Employees Actually Use

Benefits don't matter if no one uses them.

Despite offering excellent health and dental benefits, Four Seasons Tree Care was experiencing low participation and feeling the pressure of other companies trying to poach some of their best employees. When key employees leave, revenue goes with them and losing those employees would be detrimental to their business. Some clients followed those employees, costing them just north of 20% of their revenue. They'd been with the same insurance company offering great benefits for 10 years, but only 30-40% of their employees were utilizing them. They knew they had to make changes if they wanted to improve employee moral and maintain their annual revenue. ​​

Getting to the root of the problem.

We did a survey of all the employees and found that 40% of them chose to go without any insurance due to the cost. The plan the company offered was exceptional (Platinum level), but the company could only afford to pay 50% of it for their crew and the employees simply couldn’t afford the other 50%. The solution was to make more options available – the company was able to offer a lower (Gold) level plan with a very narrow network. By offering their employees options they could cover 75% of the plan cost, which was less expensive than the 50% they were paying of the other plan, and employees could actually afford insurance coverage. ​​

Proof that it works.

When the employees were given access to more affordable insurance we saw 27% of their employees opt into insurance they didn’t have before. Some of them had health insurance for the first time in their life. The employer made better and more affordable dental and vision coverage available and saw increased participation – their employees now had affordable access to dental care and glasses and contacts! In addition, their surveys uncovered that a number of the employees would benefit from having access to additional life and disability insurance. In the first year with the revamped benefits program they didn’t lose a single employee to a competitor and the CFO has expressed a tangible improvement in company culture.​
